It’s warming up in Tennessee, and soon your favorite local farmers and bakers will sell their wares at local events, farmer’s markets, and more! As a local, family-owned farm, we understand the value of shopping locally and buying from small businesses. While farming straw and hay allow us to sell our crop year-round,  many local farmers grow produce only available in spring, summer, and fall. Below are a few reasons you may choose to stop in at a local farmer’s market for groceries this spring rather than the supermarket:

Supporting Your Local Economy

When you shop at a local market where independent farmers, bakers, and artisans sell their goods, you know that your money is going into the pockets of people living in your community. Not only does that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but it helps support your local economy. When you buy from local businesses, the business owners will likely spend their money locally—unlike when you buy from big box store retailers.

Fresh, Quality Food

When buying produce, dairy, eggs, or meat from a local farmer, you will likely get a much fresher product than from the grocery store. While grocery stores ship their goods from all over the country, local farmers probably only transport produce from their farms to the market. Therefore, the goods you buy from them are often fresher and better quality! The same goes for baked goods and jams/jellies—supermarket brands tend to add preservatives to keep goods shelf stable for longer. Honey is also a great item to buy at a farmer’s market because local honey can help with pesky Tennessee allergies!

Spring Farmer’s Markets should be opening next month, and we hope you have a great time shopping with local farmers and artisans. If you have any questions about buying straw or hay from our farm, contact 615-427-9799 for more information!
